‘The Dream Weavers’ by Barbara Erskine

(Image is figurative and is not the actual book cover)

Barbara Erskine is one of my favorite historical fiction authors, so when her latest book came out, I could not wait to get my hands on it.

In fact, I put it on pre-release so I could get it and start reading as soon as possible.

There is plenty in the story to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Bringing the Setting to Life

One of the things I love about Erskine as a writer is her ability to bring the setting to life.

I’ve actually visited the Marches, which is a place between England and Wales, so I could really believe I was there, taking part in all the action, and I could see the places she was describing.

The vivid descriptions of the landscapes, historical landmarks, and ambience of the regions make you feel like you are walking alongside the characters and experiencing their world firsthand.

A Tale of Two Time Periods

The Dream Weavers is cleverly written; the history combines with the intrigue and romance that is bound to happen.

It takes place in two time periods, jumping back and forth between 2021 and 775 AD.

It’s almost like reading two stories in one, and finding out what happens in each keeps you turning the pages long after you probably should have put the book down and moved on to something else.

For those who haven’t read her books, it may sound a little confusing, jumping back and forth in time, but it’s engrossing, and her writing is just so clever that you’ll find yourself laughing, crying, and hiding behind the sofa as the story unfolds and the characters live their lives.

Blending historical and modern narratives

Erskine’s ability to seamlessly blend historical and modern narratives is one of her greatest strengths.

The transitions between time periods are smooth and well-timed, keeping the reader engaged and invested in both stories.

The dual timelines create a sense of mystery and anticipation as the connections between past and present gradually unfold.

The historical setting is richly detailed, immersing readers in the cultural and political dynamics of the time.

Compelling Characters

The Dream Weavers‘s characters are so well written that you can see them as friends or enemies very early on.

This immediate connection helps you fall in love with the story and want to know what’s going to happen next.

The modern-day: Simon’s journey

The main protagonist in 2021 is Simon, a writer who rents a small cottage on the border of England and Wales.

He is looking for seclusion to get his mind into writing mode while telling a story about the Anglo-Saxons.

But every book needs action and drama, so peace and quiet are the last things he’ll find there.

Simon’s search for inspiration and solitude is quickly interrupted by unexpected events and encounters that draw him into a deeper story.

Emma & Bea: strong supporting characters

Simon’s daughter, Emma, becomes deeply involved in the unfolding events, adding another layer to the modern-day story.

Her curiosity and adventurous spirit bring new dimensions to the story.

Similarly, Bea, a local expert, plays a crucial role in unravelling the historical mysteries that Simon stumbles upon.

Both characters are strong, independent women who add depth and richness to the plot.

The past: Eadburh’s struggle

Meanwhile, in 775 AD, there is a battle for love as Eadburh fights for the right to marry the man of her choice.

Eadburh’s story is one of passion, conflict, and determination.

Her struggle against social norms and personal adversaries is both heartbreaking and inspiring.

Spirituality & determination

As a woman, I enjoy Erskine’s strong female protagonists who are both spiritual and determined (a common theme in all her books).

Relatable characters & compelling villains

The Dream Weavers‘s main characters are easy to relate to, and most of us will identify with the good guys.

However, her villains are so bad that you will wonder how they could be so evil, but also a little jealous of their manipulative ways.

Erskine’s antagonists are cunning and formidable, providing the perfect foil for her heroes and adding considerable suspense to the plot.

Summary

Whether you are a longtime fan of Barbara Erskine’s or new to her work, The Dream Weavers offers a captivating journey through time, filled with rich historical detail, compelling characters, and a plot that will keep you hooked from start to finish.

Overall, this is a cracking read and I recommend this book to anyone looking for new fiction.

Barbara Erskine is a prolific writer, and if you enjoy this book, you will certainly be captivated by many of her other writings.

I hope this review is useful.
